Futures contract roll calendar

The front-month contract and the next four for every futures root PassTraq models — 26 roots across equity index, energy, metals, treasuries and FX — with the exact date each one stops being the front month. These are the same dates the platform itself uses to decide which contract to chart, produced by the same engine, so a chart, a journal entry and a fill always refer to the same contract.

Front month and the next four contracts

The bold code is the contract trading now; the date under each code is when that contract stops being the front month. The roll date itself counts as already rolled — on that date the next contract is the one to trade. On a quarterly cycle this table reaches four quarters ahead; on a monthly cycle, five months.

Every instrument in PassTraq's catalog has a verified roll specification, so nothing on this page falls back to a generic quarterly guess.

Why the roll matters on a prop account

Data continuity

Charts, levels and volume profiles built on the expiring contract stop updating when liquidity leaves it. Watching a thin book on an old contract while the market trades the new one is how a level that “held all week” turns out never to have been tested at all.

Position transfer

Futures positions do not roll themselves. Carrying one through the roll means closing it in the old contract and reopening it in the new one — two extra commissions, a spread, and on a physically delivered product a hard deadline at first notice day, which lands before the last trading day.

Rules and records

Those roll trades are real P&L on a challenge: they count against the daily loss limit and the drawdown like any other fill, and a roll booked as two separate symbols splits one strategy across two lines in a journal unless the accounts are kept on the same root.

How each roll date is decided

The roll is measured back from whichever anchor binds first: the last trading day for a cash-settled product, first notice day for a physically delivered one. Business-day counting here excludes weekends but not exchange holidays, so a holiday in the window can move a date by a day.

ES · MES · NQ · MNQ · YM · MYM · RTY · M2K
Cash settled. Last trading day is the third Friday of the delivery month. Rolls 4 calendar days earlier — the Monday of that week.
CL · MCL
Physically delivered. Last trading day is 3 business days before the 25th of the month preceding delivery. Rolls 4 business days before the last trading day.
NG
Physically delivered. Last trading day is 3 business days before the first of the delivery month. Rolls 2 business days before the last trading day.
GC · MGC · SI · SIL · HG
Physically delivered. First notice day — the last business day of the month before delivery — binds before the last trading day. Rolls 2 business days before first notice day.
ZB · ZN · ZF · ZT
Physically delivered. Lead month is set by first notice day — the last business day of the month before delivery. Rolls 2 business days before first notice day.
6E · 6B · 6J · 6A · 6C · 6S
Cash settled. Settles on the third Wednesday; last trading day is 2 business days before it. Rolls 3 business days before the last trading day.

Futures roll dates — frequently asked questions

What does “rolling” a futures contract mean?

Every futures contract has a delivery month and stops trading before it. Liquidity moves to the next contract in the product’s cycle days before that, and the contract carrying that liquidity is the front month. Rolling is switching your charts, your orders and your position from the expiring contract to the next one.

How is the roll date on this page calculated?

From each product’s binding anchor, not a rule of thumb. Cash-settled products roll a set distance before the last trading day; physically delivered products roll before first notice day, which comes earlier. Equity index rolls the Monday before the third Friday, WTI crude counts back from the 25th of the month before delivery, metals and treasuries count back from the last business day of the prior month. Those are the same rules the PassTraq platform uses to pick the contract it charts.

Does the roll date account for exchange holidays?

Business-day arithmetic here excludes weekends but not exchange holidays, so a holiday in the counting window can shift a date by a day. The multi-day roll offset absorbs that for the purpose of “which contract is the front month”, but confirm the exact last trading day with your broker or the exchange before the final session.

Why does the roll matter on a prop firm account?

Three practical reasons: an order sent on an expiring contract can be rejected or filled in a thin book; a position left open through the roll has to be closed and reopened in the new contract, which costs commissions and can matter against a consistency or daily-loss rule; and your journal and analytics will split one strategy across two symbols unless the roll is recorded.

Which contract does the chart show on the roll date?

The next one. The roll date itself counts as already rolled — on that date the engine treats the new contract as the front month, so the calendar’s “rolls” date is the switch-over date, not the last day of the old contract.

Roll dates are modelled from each product's exchange contract specification and can change without notice — always confirm the last trading day and first notice day with your broker or the exchange. Prop firm rules change too; confirm those on the firm's own site. PassTraq is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a partner of any prop firm or exchange.
