Futures tick value calculator

What a move in ticks or points is worth in dollars on 26 futures contracts, and how many ticks of stop a dollar risk allows. The figures are the contract specs the PassTraq platform values fills with.

Your move

ES: one tick is 0.25 and worth $12.50; one point is 4 ticks. A move in points is snapped to the tick grid.

How many ticks does a dollar risk allow?

Stop that fits, per contract

40 ticks (10 points) on 1 contract

Rounded down to whole ticks, so the stop never risks more than the dollars you entered (before commissions and slippage). ES contract specs

Every contract's full spec — tick size, point value, the current front month and its roll date — is on its own page, for example ES and MNQ.

Frequently asked

What is a tick value?

The dollars one minimum price move is worth on one contract. ES moves in ticks of 0.25 worth $12.50; CL in ticks of 0.01 worth $10.00. Profit or loss on a trade is ticks moved × tick value × contracts.

What is the difference between a tick and a point?

A point is a whole unit of price; a tick is the smallest step the price can take. On ES one point is 4 ticks, so a point is worth $50.00; on CL one point (a dollar a barrel) is 100 ticks.

Why do micro contracts have the same tick size?

A micro tracks the same price on the same grid at a smaller multiplier: MES moves in 0.25 ticks like ES, but each is worth $1.25 instead of $12.50. That is why prop traders size down to micros to stay inside a daily loss limit.

How do I size a stop to a prop firm daily loss limit?

Divide the dollars you are willing to lose by tick value × contracts and round down: that is the widest stop that fits. The lower half of the calculator does exactly that, before commissions and slippage, which a real fill adds on top.
